A Study Review of a Study Review of the effectIveness of cupping For acute and chronic pain management

That was a mouthful, huh?

For this study, thirteen databases and four trial registries were searched for randomized clinical trials on the subject. Sixteen trials with 921 participants were eligible and included. Six trials were assessed as low risk of bias, another six trials were of unclear risk of bias, and the remaining four trials were of high risk of bias.

The overall analysis showed cupping to have a beneficial effect, compared to no therapy or just heat therapy. An individual study showed that cupping was more effective than “conventional drugs”. the only adverse effect of cupping that were reported were marks and pun at the treatment site and increasing local pain or tingling.

The study review concluded that “This review suggests a potential positive short-term effect of cupping therapy on reducing pain intensity compared with no treatment, heat therapy, usual care, or conventional drugs”.
