The Astounding Benefits of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a soft tissue technique that uses hand held tools to help correct scar tissue formation, decreased mobility, and restricted blood and lymph circulation. IASTM tools may be made from different materials (ex: wood, horn, stainless steel, ceramic, etc), but my favorites are my jade and bamboo tools.

IASTM has been shown to improve range of motion and improve muscle function for athletes, as well as to aid in recovery from sports or orthopedic injuries. The depth of application is surprising, as only light to moderate pressure are required for therapeutic results. Many see the marks left by this technique and expect it to be painful. However, these marks are temporary (lasting several hours to a week) and most clients find the technique to be incredibly relieving - noting a near immediate “unwinding” of muscle and fascial tension.

I prefer to use this IASTM techniques on areas of chronic pain and inflammation, not on acute injuries. Generally, the acute injury site is far too guarded and painful to allow for musch pressure at all to be applied. In these acute cases, I turn to gentle myofascial cupping and light to moderate massage to help encourage proper healing of the soft tissues and decrease excessive inflammation. After the initial inflammation has dissipated, then IASTM techniques can be incredibly beneficial to the individual.
